n Promotions within the Morganton Police Department have been announced. Ned Fleming was advanced to lieutenant to take the place occupied by Billy J. Hamrick who recently resigned. Troy Boughman and Norman Long were promoted to sergeants.
n Morganton's Joe Huffman was named to the All-Northwestern Conference basketball squad as voted by the nine coaches and announced by W.C. Clary of Winston-Salem.
n The marriage between Dottie Nifong and Alvin Dickens Jr. has been announced. They were married at First Baptist Church in Raleigh.
n McCallie School students home for spring break are Jimmy Braddock, Rawley Speir and Randy Starrett. Headed back to Appalachian after spring break are Cynthia Gilliam, Gayle Brittain, Millie Benfield, Joyce Poore and Ina Cloer.
n Mrs. Flora Whitley Cauble has embarked on a new job as hostess for Burke Dairy. Her job will be to help newcomers feel welcome to our fair city.
n The third snowfall in less than a month, and maybe the worst, struck Burke County. The snow started around 3 a.m. and by 8 a.m. measured 5¼ inches. The final measurement at the end was 9¼ inches.
n Twelve-year-old Steve Mast, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Mast, is being blamed for the snow. It was reported that when blessing was being said he asked permission to say a prayer of his own. The prayer was, "Lord, please let it snow again."

n Lester C. McFadden who is sergeant at arms of the Morganton Optimist Club, received a life membership in Optimist International, which he won in a recent project. Clarence Crouch presented the award.
n Joan Anita Lowman was second-place winner in the 1959 County Dress Revue. She modeled the dress she made for her eighth-grade graduation banquet at Rutherford College.
n When a fellow is 11 and his first pair of skis is only five minutes in his possession, he just has to try them out. David Abee, son of Norma Lee Abee of Valdese, tried out his pair on the courthouse lawn.
n Local Jaycees brought out a picture of Carolyn Clark, former Miss Morganton, to get people's minds off the snow. It's a reminder that, with spring just 10 days away, the Jaycees are already making plans for another Miss Morganton contest. Working on the committee are Frank Bowers, Tommy Shuping, Harry Alwran, Jim McCall and Jerry Nalls.
n Girl Scouts of Troop 135 went through a dignified ceremony during the Hillcrest PTA meeting. The group included Ann Grubb, Peggy McGimpsey, Patricia Kille, Eloise McAuley, Becky Smith, Sarah Vernon and Norma Lang.
n Owen C. McCoy, U.S. Navy seaman apprentice, son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. McCoy Sr., returned to Norfolk, Va., aboard the amphibious force flagship USS Taconic.
n This week's second snow, the fourth in less than a month, blanketed Burke County, but stopped at least temporarily before noon. It measured 1½ inches.
n Elaine Hudson has been selected as Junior Miss Majorette of the East for the month of March by Drum Major magazine.
