East Burke High School senior Tanner Anderson placed second in the nation in high jump at the 2010 Nike National Indoor Track and Field High School Championships.
He also earned first-team All-American honors.
Anderson was up against Dwayne Golbek of Claremore, Okla., who'll compete next year for University of Arkansas
Each missed an intermediate jump (Anderson at 1.99 meters, Golbek at 2.04) before Golbek cleared 2.09 meters (6 feet, 10.25 inches), a personal best.
"Finishing second was rough to take," Anderson said, "but it was a blessing just to be here at this stage of my athletic career."
He added, "Finishing second also makes me more motivated to finish my current season and high school career on top. I want to be able to finish the conference, regionals, state and outdoor nationals as one the best in the nation."
He thanked "God, first and foremost," his parents, East Burke High School and the EBHS Booster Club for allowing him to make the trip to the competition in Boston's Reggie Lewis Center.
Anderson's coach, Odell Williams, said, "I as a coach can't be anything but ecstatic for the young man. He deserves everything he gets. Duke University is getting a rare find in a genuine student first and an excellent athlete second. Education is always a first for the young man."
Williams added, "The best is yet to come for this young man."
