Valdese vendors don't waste time offering alcohol

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Just a little more than two weeks after voters approved alcohol sales in Valdese, some businesses are selling it and others are preparing to start selling it.
Jack-B-Quick started selling beer March 11 and American Coffee, Espresso and Antiques shop started selling Waldensian Heritage Winery wines on Monday.
The first customer to buy a glass of wine at the coffee and antiques shop was Rick Pons, said owner Matt Ferris.
"I wanted to be the first to purchase a glass of wine in downtown Valdese," Pons said. "I have waited a long time for Valdese to be able to serve alcohol, and I am thrilled to be the first customer."
Ferris said his shop is only selling Waldensian wines right now. He said customers can either buy a glass or a bottle of the wines.
"Numerous travelers have stopped by our shop and have inquired about the Waldensian Winery," Ferris said. "Instead of just telling them about the wine, we can now serve it to them."
He said the shop also offers wine accessories, such as wine racks and stoppers.
One Stop plans to sell alcohol and is in the process of applying for a permit, said Manager Linda Shook.
The same is true for Food Lion.
Renee Dale, a manager at Food Lion, said they are waiting for final fire inspections and getting vendors set up before they get a permit. She expects the store will get a permit in about a week. The store may have to sell beer and wine warm until the store makes room for cold storage, she said.
Habaneros Mexican Restaurant also is in the process of getting a permit to sell beer and liquor by the drink, said Manager Jose Macias. He said the restaurant should be able to offer it in the next several weeks. And depending on how many customers request wine will depend on whether the restaurant sells it, he said.
Pizza Hut District Manager Marie Register said she's not sure whether the restaurant will sell alcohol but she believes it will. She said the decision has to be approved at Pizza Hut's main office in Wichita, Kan.
Register said the paperwork needed to apply for a permit has been sent to Pizza Hut's main office. Register said she believes the eatery will offer alcohol sales because every Pizza Hut in a town that allows sales has it.
