Lazarus Clothing is having an informal modeling of back-to-school clothes. Cute little models will be Jan Taylor, Judy Walker and Marty Paisley.
n Several ex-college students will remain close to home for their career in school teaching. Those who will be teaching in Drexel are Benny Martin, High Point graduate; Gayle Loftin, Greensboro College; and Mary Walton, who last year taught in Winston-Salem.
n J.D.Fitz attended a luncheon and press conference at the invitation of Sen. John F. Kennedy, who was host to the newspapermen from North Carolina. Sen. Kennedy received loud and long applause when he answered a question as to whether his religion would hurt him in the state. Kennedy said, “I can’t believe, that in 1960, in the United States, people are going to say I can’t be president because of the church I go to.”
n Eleanor Moore was crowned Miss Drexel Fair with Margaret Smith and Marlene Simmons as runners-up.
n With the opening of school, young Charles Walter Lawyer, carrying a book satchel larger than a diplomat’s portfolio, walked through the door of Forest Hill School to be enrolled in the first grade. He is the son of Ruth Greene Lawyer.
n Seen/Heard West Burke: Paul Powell pushing a stroller with his fine baby in it… Mrs. Iris LaFevers talking to her neighbor after getting the mail from her rural mailbox… A nice row of okra in a garden near the Duke Power plant… Bird feeders and a “for sale” sign at the Walt Franklin home.
n Ted Whisnant of The News Herald’s composing room has a keen sense of humor and apparently his son, David, age 8, inherited it. When the census takers came to their door, David let them in. They started asking question about what his father does, to which David replied, “He makes liquor.” They asked where he made it and he replied, “He has six stills up on the mountain.” About that time his mother arrived to take up the question answering and she soon straightened out her son. Father Ted shivered sympathetically in using the words “straighten him out.” No one questioned him about the gruesome details.
n Airman William V. Fox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Fox, is home for a 30-day leave from Anchorage, Alaska, where he was stationed for two years. He will be stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
n Debbie Greene, age 4, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Greene, entertained 45 of her little friends at a birthday party. The theme of the party was Hansel and Gretel and the party included a cake in the shape of a house with Hansel, Gretel and the witch on it.
n Mr. and Mrs. Forest Farr Jr. have the distinction of being the first people in Burke County to vote in the Nov. 8 election. They appeared before Judge T. Earl Franklin to obtain absentee ballots and proceeded to vote on the spot. Farr, who is in the U.S. Air Force, has been stationed in Greenland. His entire family will be leaving for Hawaii for his new assignment.

Gordon Queen: A young woman in the world’s shortest shorts… Folks talking politics at this early date… At one time, Grace Hospital owned a horse-drawn ambulance… Stewart Lingerfelt wearing a broad grin as he drove his truck around town…. Once upon a time, there were hardly any places in Morganton where traveling folks could eat, unless they went to the Hotel Morgan… Residents talking about the Valdese beer election… Swimming days are about over… Roy’s Jewelers is now open on North Sterling Street… A double-decked bus passing through town… Officer Carl Ford eyeing a truck out of parking position… Roy Waycaster and Stanley Moore telling jokes.
