n Teachers in the three school systems of Burke County, payless during the summer season, will receive bonus checks. State revenue has proved sufficient and $76,347.60 has been allotted to be distributed. Whether it’s “bonus” pay or a pay boost is being debated.
n Georgia Kincaid became the bride of James B. Cates. The wedding took place at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
n Those taking part in the 1960 Miss Drexel Community Fair beauty contest are Mary Neal Lowery, Margaret Smith, Nancy Powell, Pat Berry, Elinore Moore, Zona Baker, Marlene Simmons and Betsy Arrowood.
n Ann Deal, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Deal, who holds the title of Miss Majorette of Drexel, will perform in the Drexel Community Fair. Kim Cozort, seven-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Cozort, plays with a baton while her mother goes over a practice session with Ann. Mrs. Cozort hopes Kim will grow up liking the twirling as much as she does.
n Howard Copenhaver has received his orders to report for duty with the Air Force at Keesler Air Base in Mississippi. Howard recently graduated from State College.
n Gorman Seagle listened to fellow workers in the machine room at Drexel Furniture talk about the big fine tomatoes in their gardens. Seagle considered his tomatoes were just as exceptionally large and fine. He told the guys his tomato plants were so large that a bird had built a nest in one. He took a picture to prove that a bird had indeed built a nest among his tomatoes. Later the bird abandoned the nest leaving two eggs. Just too much activity with tomato pickers.
n Linda Murphy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Murphy of Jacksonville, Fla., has been spending the summer in Morganton with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Robinson. She has been working in the office at Morganton Tire which is her uncle’s store.
n The MHS majorettes won the State Majorette Corps Championship in New Bern. They were Judy Williams, Becky Smith, Donna Summers, Janice Mast, Matoka Dale and Beth Hooper.
n Shadowline, Inc., nationally known manufacturer of lingerie, will open its plant to the public to visit and see the recently completed renovations and the newly added air conditioner.
n Congratulations to Laura Ann Hensley who graduated from Presbyterian School of Nursing in Charlotte. Ann Barbour will return to Duke University where she will be a sophomore. Tuffy Falls will head to Chattanooga where he will be a marshall for Helen Miller at the Cotton Ball.
n School fees for all Burke County schools will be $1.50 for elementary school pupils and at least $3.85 for high school students. Part of the elementary school fees are 30 cents for instructional readers and 50 cents for supplementary readers.
n Bernie Setzer was elected president of the Burke County Board of the National Association for Retarded Children, Inc.
n Jimmy Ervin, 4, learned that some of his playmates had acquired puppies, cats and other pets. His dad, Sam J. Ervin III, arrived home and was greeted excitedly by Jimmy who told his dad that they had a pet. His dad was bracing himself for the answer when Jimmy told him it was a frog.
n Bits from J. Gordon Queen — The new parking lot on South King Street chocked full of cars … Three pretty little majorettes stopping in the News Herald to talk things over ... At one time there was a near-beer saloon across Hunting Creek, then outside the corporate limits … A long legged man outrunning Leslie Patton … Sgt. Jim Ross, Army recruiter, walking straight as a stick … Years ago Morganton High School was on Avery Avenue and R.L. Patton was superintendent … Citizens showing their tonsils as they tried to spot the satellite.
