Burke County had fewer traffic fatalities and accident-related injuries in 2010, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers in Burke County responded to seven fatal traffic accidents in 2010, down from 10 deaths in 2009, according to Sgt. Jeff Gordon, a spokesman for the Highway Patrol.
There were 432 traffic-accident-related injuries in 2010, he said, down from 473 in 2009.
Gordon says he does not know why both figures fell, but he suspects it was from increased police visibility, efforts to keep motorists informed about new safety laws and traffic operations.
The overall number of accidents increased, he said. State troopers responded to 1,424 wrecks in 2010, an increase of 3 percent from 1,381 in 2009.
The state also released year-end highway fatality data for North Carolina.
There were 968 people who lost their lives on N.C. roads in 2010, which includes 85 pedestrians, 11 bicyclists and 127 motorcyclists.
Alcohol was a factor in 190 deadly crashes across the state.
The number of deaths is nearly identical to 2009’s 969 fatalities on North Carolina roads.
