Three groups of Girl Scouts lined up to enter Grace Episcopal Church and begin the observance of Girl Scout Week's 49th anniversary. Girl Scouts also attended many other church services in the Morganton area as one of the features of the week.
» Five pupils of Goldie Shiflet returned from musical competition in Boone, all rating among the best. Those receiving high honors were Susan Ward, Lillian Pitts, Betty Hill Pitts, Jean R. Ward and Mary Stafford Patton.
» When Burke County residents subscribed to $150,000 in bonds to help finance the construction of the Morganton Finishing Co., W.C. Whisnant was first to put in his money. Abbie Ross issued bond No. 1 while J. Dickson Taylor looked on.
» First Lt. Charles Motley Poteat will return to the United States after an 11th-month tour of duty in Turkey. He graduated from The Citadel and has been the executive officer of a training detachment in Turkey. His job was to instruct the Turks in the use of Honest John rockets.
» Morganton Woman's Club presented its annual fashion show. Show chairman Mrs. Carroll Hoyle and commentator Madeline Patton described the beautiful fashions. Local models were Mrs. Fred Black, Mrs. E.P. Bounous, Mrs. Andrew Kistler, Mrs. John Conway, Janice Barron, Mrs. W.E. Cobb, Jan Taylor, Mrs. Ruby Morrow, Kelly Hoyle, Mrs. George Earp, Mrs. Sam Rogers, Betsy KcKee, Sarah Ann Wallace, Phyllis Volz and Iris Patton.
» Eight Girl Scouts and two of their counselors will participate in a tour of Mexico as part of a Scouts International Friendship project. Making the tour will be Janice Poteat, Lynda Norman, Sonia Bounous, Susan Settlemyre, Betty Ann Benfield, Jane Butler, Mary Phifer and Norma Lang. Counselors will be Mrs. Sara Gantt and Mrs. E. P. Bounous.
» Thomas Wesley Smith has been promoted to the rank of airman. He is the son of Mrs. Iva Smith.
» Joyce Fox was honored with a party celebrating her 10th birthday. Refreshments of ice cream, Cokes and bubble gum were served.
» Back in 1919, Waits Harbison, dressed as Uncle Sam, led the Fourth of July parade. Following behind was the Morganton Fire Department team and fire wagon driven by Charlie Ward. After the city sold its fire horses and bought a truck, Charlie continued working for the city in the sanitary department.
» Billy Smith, star forward for the Valdese Tigers, has signed a grant-in-aid with Wake Forest College. Smith topped all scorers in the Northwestern Conference.
» Vickie Talley will swim in the annual Aquatic Show at Converse College. "Perfumes on Parade" is the title of the event that will feature diving, stunts and synchronized swimming by members of the Aquatic Club.
» The president of the Pilot Club and members of the committee in charge of arrangements for the club's annual guest night met to make plans. Those members were Mrs. Janice Caddell, Goldie Shiflet, Betty Fisk, Mrs. Robert Giles and Mrs. Robert Colville.
