DREXEL — Drexel is taking out all the stops this year for its annual spring carnival and according to Don Deal, president of the Drexel Community Fair, you aren’t going to want to miss this.
The carnival at the Drexel Fairgrounds opens Tuesday and continues through Saturday.
“It’s always a good time to get out of the house, especially after winter, and it’s nice to see people in the community and see old friends,” Deal said. “We always have good food and good entertainment. It’s the perfect way to kick the summer off.”
This year’s event is going to be especially exciting, Deal said, because of great live entertainment and delicious, classic fair food.
“The fire department has country ham sandwiches. The Morganton First Church of God’s men will be selling funnel cakes. We have nachos, pizza, candied apples, snow cones, hamburgers, hotdogs and all kinds of deep-fried things,” Deal said. “You never know what they are going to pull out; they like to keep it interesting, that is for sure.”
Deal said he is pleased with the response from vendors.
“We have a lot of great people participating this year,” Deal said. “Some are raising funds for their organization and some just like to be a part of the action, but either way it’s going to be a great time for everyone.”
Falls Price, president of the men’s fellowship group at the Morganton First Church of God, said he agrees that the turnout for the carnival is good despite the season.
“I think it does great for the springtime,” Price said. “It’s not as big as in August, but still we have a good turnout, and it’s a way to help the fair also.”
Price said his group really benefits from being involved with the carnival.
“We did it because it’s a good way to raise funds for our men’s group,” Price said. “We’ve done it now for nine or 10 years. It helps us make money every year.”
Deal said the local support for the event has been great over the past couple of years and he thinks it will continue to grow due to the value the carnival provides.
“The community has done an excellent job getting people out,” Deal said. “We strive hard to have a place with good value. You can come out for a relatively cheap evening and get good entertainment.”
Price said he likes having the carnival because there isn’t much to do around Drexel during this time of the year.
“In Drexel there is not a lot to do for the community, so it gives the residents something to come to and attend,” Price said. “It’s not quite like our fair in August, but we get to run into old friends and it is sort of like a reunion.”
Deal said even eating is cheap, because they try to keep prices in check.
He said that the environment they provide also helps get the community involved.
“It’s a very safe environment,” Deal said. “I have two grandchildren, and I’m definitely not going to be part of something if they couldn’t come too, so we try to provide the safest environment possible.”
Price said he loves the food and atmosphere, but one of his favorite things about the carnival is the children.
“To see all of the kids having a good time is what the carnival is about,” Price said. “I love to watch people enjoying themselves, and the carnival has a lot of that.”
