According to a press release from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) , State Superintendent June Atkinson will hold a news conference Monday at 4 p.m. to discuss the the potential closure of one of the state’s three residential school campuses.
The three schools facing potential closure are North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton, Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf in Wilson and the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh.
The three residential schools were transferred from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to NCDPI on June 1. Not long after the transfer, NC Session Law 2011-145 7.25 (a) Report to the General Assembly on the Closure of a Residential School Campus was signed. The legislation directed NCDPI to recommend the closure of one of the three campuses and consolidate services at the two remaining campuses. NCDPI will report the recommendations to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee by Jan. 15, 2012. On July 1, 2012 NCDPI will “carry out the closure and consolidation described in the report,” according to the press release.
Monday’s news conference will be audio streamed online at www.ncpublicschools.org/stateboard/meetings.
