VALDESE — On Wednesday morning, students and their parents released the butterflies swarming in their stomachs as the Burke County speech competition came to a close. A panel of 16 judges voted on the top four student orators during the county-wide competition at Old Rock School in Valdese.
Burke County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Larry Putnam addressed the crowd, including the winners from all 15 elementary schools around Burke, their instructional coaches, principals and families.
“This is a great opportunity to showcase the talent we have in the Burke County Public School System and a way to accentuate the positive,” he said.
Putnam applauded the efforts of great teachers, parents, students and community helpers.
“I challenge each and every one to go back into your communities and schools and tell the good things that are happening in the Burke County Schools,” he said.
The top four winners from each elementary school were represented. Second- and third-place winners in four categories including prose, poetry, original composition, and most notable speech received medals, while first-place winners in these categories received a plaque. The top four county winners received an additional medal. First-place winners were: Salem’s Megan Beach, original composition; Oak Hill’s Taylor Cloer, poetry; Rutherford College’s Olivia Reed, prose and Valdese Elementary’s Lyle Holland, most notable speech.
After receiving their awards, the top four winners recited their winning speeches. For more information visit www.Burke.k12.nc.us.
