The school board will again hear a contentious proposal to hand over one of its gyms to a municipality.
The Burke County Board of Education will discuss the issue at its meeting Monday night. The proposal would transfer the gym at Hallyburton Academy to the town of Drexel. A breezeway connects the gym to the school and those using the gym do not have to enter the main building for access.
The plan has divided the school board in recent months. The board narrowly approved declaring the gym surplus in a 4-3 vote, then deadlocked last month on transferring the gym to Drexel in a 3-3 vote.
Sam Wilkinson was absent at the last vote.
Proponents of the transfer contend that the academy does not use the gym and it will go to waste unless it’s opened up to the community. Opponents argue that the million dollar asset is too valuable to give away and note the school uses the gym for P.E. classes.
Board chair Catherine Thomas said at the last vote that she wanted a decision postponed until after the Nov. 8 elections.
Other items on Monday’s agenda include:
» A presentation from interim superintendent Larry Putnam on Burke’s corporate punishment policy.
» A vote on whether to postpone the next visit from accreditor SACS CASI.
» A discussion on activity bus mileage.
The Burke County Board of Education meets at 6 p.m. Monday in the West Concord Resource Center’s Olive Hill Room at 509 W. Concord St., Morganton.
