The traffic lights are up but they aren’t running yet on the bridge over Interstate 40 at exit 113.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is now working on utility relocation and anticipates having the signals up and running in the coming weeks.
The $245,000 project on Malcolm Boulevard includes the installation of traffic lights at both the east and westbound ramps.
“Engineers determined the intersection qualified for a traffic signal based on a formula involving traffic counts and other factors,” said Julia Casadonte, DOT communications officer.
Factors include approach volumes and left versus right-turning traffic.
In 2009, the point just north of the I-40 intersection saw 13,000 vehicles per day.
