Mayor Jimmy Huffman passed away Monday afternoon, Rutherford College Town Manager Kenneth Geathers said.
Geathers could not confirm the cause of Huffman’s death.
“Mayor Huffman was a beautiful person, a brilliant leader,” said Geathers. “…It’s a tremendous loss to Rutherford College.”
Councilman Gary McClure said, “Mayor Huffman is such a vital part of our town and I’ve known him for many, many years. And I’m just heartbroken right now.”
Huffman served as mayor since his election in 1989. His current term runs through 2013.
Prior to his service as mayor, Huffman served as a Rutherford College Town Council member. He was first appointed in June 1977 and was elected the following November.
Altogether, Huffman served Rutherford College for almost 35 years.
