Deputies found a Winston-Salem couple wanted on federal charges hiding in Burke County.
Investigators have linked the pair to at least one vehicle theft and believe the husband and wife were involved in multiple crimes.
Jerry Daniel Plott Jr., 50, and Rhonda Ann Plott, 46, both of 5434 Helen St., were found in two different campers on Watershed Road this week, according to a sheriff’s office press release.
The couple was arrested on federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, aiding and abetting wire fraud and aiding and abetting identity theft.
A U.S. Postal Service inspector contacted the sheriff’s office after the agency found evidence the couple was living in the Watershed Road area.
Investigators canvassed the neighborhood Monday and found Jerry Plott hiding under a couch in a camper near 7640 Watershed Road, the release said. Rhonda Plott was found Tuesday in a nearby camper.
Investigative Lt. Rodney Norman said detectives seized two utility trailers, and two all-terrain vehicles they believe the Plotts kept near the campers.
One of the vehicles was reported stolen in Lee County.
Jerry Plott initially presented a fake ID to investigators, Norman said, and he believes the 50-year-old may be wanted under aliases in other counties.
Norman did not have additional information on the federal charges.
Under federal law, the Plotts could each face up to 42 years in prison if convicted.
The couple is being held without bond at the Burke-Catawba District Confinement Facility.
Jerry Plott has a storied criminal past, according to prison records, with past convictions on at least two dozen counts including: five break-ins, three felony drug charges, two counts of resisting a public officer and a weapons charge.
The 50-year-old has spent nearly four years in North Carolina prisons across two stints and was most recently released on March 31, 2006.
