Ervin is running against incumbent Justice Paul Newby of Raleigh.
Judicial elections are non-partisan.
Republican Chris Petrella of Marion joined three other Republicans and two Democrats in the race for the state’s 11th Congressional District seat.
Petrella is an economic development consultant.
The filing period runs until noon Feb. 29.
