1. Help out families affected by the tornado by donating items or your time. A temporary donation center is next to Hildebran First Baptist Church on exit 118 of Interstate 40. Large quantities of clothing have been donated, and food and household items are still needed. Six area United Methodist Churches came together and formed the Eastern Burke Tornado Relief team. The group is working on home repairs, temporary housing needs and spiritual needs. To contact the group, call 828-397-6939.
2. Cheer local high school swimmers on to championships. The Draughn and East Burke swim teams are again expected to contend for titles Saturday at the Catawba Valley 2A Conference championship meet. The event begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Jimmy C. Draughn Aquatic Center, 312 Massel Ave. Admission is $5.
3. Expand your child’s knowledge beyond Batman with bat tales at Lake James State Park. At 1 p.m. Saturday, park ranger Nora Coffey will share a children’s story about bats. Afterward, children will make bat crafts to take home. The program is most appropriate for families with children ages 4 and up. Meet in the Catawba River Area basement classroom.
4. Take in some spiritual music. Gaston Chapel, 205 Inglewood Drive, hosts Continuing the Dream, a concert featuring Anointed of Lenoir at 6 p.m. Saturday with special guest Mt. Zion Baptist Church Spiritual Choir.
5. Encourage birds and other critters to feed in your backyard. Lake James State Park ranger Jamie Cameron offers an in-depth discussion of backyard feeding stations for wildlife at 1 p.m. Sunday. Learn about tips and strategies for attracting birds and other animals with food and habitat enhancements, while discouraging unwanted interlopers. Meet in the Catawba River Area basement classroom.
