As a strong supporter of animals' rights to humane treatment, it breaks my heart when I see the abuse and neglect of millions of animals depicted in the ASPCA television messages. I know all too well what they show is only the tip of a very ugly iceberg.
The ASPCA does wonderful work in reducing animal abuse and neglect and they certainly need the donations they request. Unfortunately, none of these funds are funneled back to our own humane society right here in Burke County.
Friends for Animals Humane Society of Burke County is our local organization dedicated to the betterment of life for the animals of Burke County. This is the organization you contact when cruelty, abuse or neglect of an animal is suspected. Ed Davis, cruelty investigator, responds at all hours of the day and night investigating and correcting the offending situations. These are the people who, many times each week, take animals from animal control, insuring they will not be euthanized and caring for them until suitable homes can be found. Director Toni Davis leads a group of dedicated and hard-working employees and volunteers as they work together, saving as many unwanted Burke County animals as possible. This is who you call with animal-related questions or to get some assistance for emergency veterinary care.
Just like the ASPCA, Friends for Animals relies heavily on donations from the public – donations that have greatly decreased due to the economic crisis in which we find ourselves. While the ASPCA needs financial support, I would ask the citizens of Burke County to first consider our own humane society and its need for all the support it can get. If you donate to organizations that help animals, please first consider Friends for Animals Humane Society of Burke County.
