Tennis tournament
A tennis tournament is scheduled for today through Friday at the Collett Street Recreation Center. The three levels are beginner (ages 6-12), intermediate (8-15) and advanced (15-18). Contact Sandra Powell or Butch McSwain at 438-5350.
Cookout
The East Burke High School fall athletic cookout will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the football stadium.
Oak Hill football
Sign-ups for Oak Hill football are now being taken. Football practice is on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. First regular season game is Sept. 6. Teams to sign-up for are pre-pee wee, pee wee, mighty mite and midget.
East Burke football
The East Burke High football team has a scrimmage at 5 p.m. today. Gates open at 4:45 p.m. The team also has scrimmages on Friday at Wilkes High and Aug. 21 at Asheville High.
Patton soccer
Patton High boys’ soccer practice and try-outs are from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Liberty Middle School. A current physical must be on file or bring it to practice. Bring running shoes or indoor shoes and cleats.
Draughn tennis
Draughn High girls’ tennis team will be holding work outs at 7 p.m. today and Thursday. Players must have a participation form and current physical. Contact Coach Cozort for more details at ccozort@burke.k12.nc.us.
Freedom High sports
- Freedom cross-country practice starts at 7 p.m. today at Freedom Park. Meet at the tennis courts.
- Freedom girls’ tennis practices are at 3:30 p.m. Practices will continue each day. Meet at the Freedom Park tennis courts prepared to workout.
- Boys interested in playing soccer at Freedom can still come out for the team. Practices will be held from through Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Freedom Park. Contact head coach David Fletcher at 879-3718 or via e-mail at dfletch@burke.k12.nc.us.
- Volleyball practice will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. each day until the first game on Aug. 19.
- Freedom is holding field hockey camp for girls ages 8-17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today through Thursday at the fields at Freedom Park. Fee is $30.

- All athletes and parents are invited to attend the Fall Kickoff Cook out and information meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in the cafeteria. There is no cost and there will be food, Freedom apparel, season pass sales and forms to be signed. This is for all athletes in any sport.
- Freedom High will hold Football Recreation Recognition night for players and cheerleaders at the opening game vs. Patton on Aug. 22. Coaches should have players at the top of the stadium hill no later than 7 p.m. to sign in. Teams will be recognized on the field during pre-game. Recreation players and coaches in jerseys will be admitted free. Middle schools will be recognized at a later home game.

HOP race
The seventh annual HOP (Help Our Project) Race will be held on Oct. 4. The 10K and 5K starts at 8:30 a.m.; Kid’s 2K starts at 9:45 a.m.; and the Family Fun Run starts at 10:20 a.m. Races start at Martha’s Park. Valdese soccer

Draughn High cross-country
Draughn High cross-country practice starts at 6 p.m. Practice will be held at the track at Draughn. Runners need to bring a physical or have one on file to participate. Practices will be held Mondays through Thursdays until the school year begins.
Patton golf
Girls interested in playing golf for Patton High can contact David Simpson at 433-1780. Practice is at Mimosa Hills today and Thursday.
East Burke sign-ups
- Registrations are being held for children in the Hildebran-Icard area for football, cheerleading and outdoor soccer. Sign-ups will be at the Hildebran Pool from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Cost is $35.
- Registrations for baseball for boys ages 8-10 will be held Saturday at the baseball field. Boys cannot turn 11 before May 1, 2009.
East Burke High sports practices
- Women’s tennis practice begins at 10 a.m. at the tennis courts.
- Soccer practice will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and also from 4 to 6 p.m. at the gym.
- Volleyball practice will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Meet in the main gym.
For all sports, have a physical and proof of insurance on file at the school.
Patton cheerleading
- Cheerleading (through Wednesday)
Instruction will include motions, jumps, stunts, dance, cheer/chant and tumbling. Campers will have opportunity to cheer at a Patton football game. Cost is $40. 9 a.m. to noon - K-8th grade
Forest Hill football
Forest Hill football practices will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at Freedom’s practice field. The Forest Hill Boosters will be taking sign-ups during each practice until Aug. 30. Call Scott Davis at 438-0708 or 390-4038.
Girls amateur league softball
An amateur softball league has openings for teams wanting to play fastpitch softball this fall season. Openings are for 10U, 12U and 14U teams. Teams will be playing under Tarheel League rules. Contact Mark Young at 397-3131.

Ray Childers cheer clinic

Pioneer Football League
Registration has started for the 2008 Pioneers team. The league is open to boys ages 12 through 18 who attend home school or a private school.
