South Mountains State Park
Tuesday, 11 a.m.; Summer Kid’s Club: What’s in the water?
How many different kinds of creatures live in the river? Join a park ranger in the stream to turn over some rocks and learn more about animals that live there. Come prepared to get wet. Meet at the visitor center.

Lake James State Park
Tuesday, 9 a.m., Invasive exotic species
This workshop will focus on management of invasive, non-native plant species. Bring bag lunch, water and snacks. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear; hiking boots and long pants recommended. This workshop is weather dependent.

Hunter Education classes
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will be conducting Hunter Safety certification classes in Burke County on Aug. 18-20. All dates required. Classes begin at 6 p.m. Contact Officer Phillip Tallent at 437-3420. Certification requires a total of 10 hours and is recognized in all 50 states.

Wheelin sportsmen banquet
The Foothills Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Burke County will hold a “Wheelin Sportsmen Benefit Banquet” on Aug. 23 at the Morganton Community House. Single tickets are $25 and couples tickets are $40. NWTF and other items will be available for auction and raffle. Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7:30 p.m. Contact Tony Robinson at 874-1915 for tickets.

Table Rock Quail Unlimited

Monday night fishing
The Blue Ridge Bassmaster’s “Monday Night Fishing With Friends” is open to the public and runs from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Castle Bridge access area on Lake Rhodhiss. The fee is $15 per person or $30 per two-man team. The payout will be for first, second and third, plus big fish. Contact Jon Digh at 312-0553 or Clint Lackey at 443-0407.

Juniors state tournament
The N.C. Bass Federation Nation Juniors state tournament will be held Oct. 25 on Lake Hickory at Whittenburg Landing. Participants must be members of Junior Bass and N.C. State Fed Nation. The application deadline is Oct. 11. Contact Bob Patrick at 461-0870.

Wild turkey banquet
The Blue Ridge Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Catawba County will hosting its Super Fund banquet beginning at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. on Aug. 8 at the Park Inn/Gateway Center. Ticket holders will be eligible to win prizes. Friday night fishing
Friday Night “Fishing With Friends” event is held every Friday through Aug. 15. It goes out of Midway Marina on U.S. 150 at 7 p.m. Weigh in is at 2 a.m. Entry fee is $40 per boat. A one-time annual membership fee of $10 is required. It is an open tournament. Call 461-0870.

Tuesday night fishing
The Not-Just-Fishin Tuesday Night Tournaments will be held on both Lake Hickory and Lake Rhodhiss on Tuesdays. Both events will run from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with a three fish, 14-inch limit. The fee is $15 per person. Contact J.D. Norton at 726-0718.

Seniors Bass Tournament on Lake Rhodhiss
All fishermen are invited to the Seniors Bass Tournament on Lake Rhodhiss every Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Castle Bridge. Tournament is open to the public with a one fish weigh in limit. Fee is $5 payable at weigh in.
