East Burke practices/tryouts
- East Burke High cross country practice is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Old Rock School in Valdese.
- Volleyball tryouts begin on Aug. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the main gym. Contact coach Tracy Greene at 397-5541 Ext. 3110.
- Men's soccer practice will begin Aug. 4 at 8 a.m. on the track at the stadium. Contact coach Roy Shulman at 397-5541 Ext. 3410.
- Women's golf practice begins Aug. 25. Contact coach Katie Gravel at 397-5541 Ext. 3315.

Freedom sports practices
- Football begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday. All players should report to the field house by 5:30 p.m. Practice will be same each day.
- Cross country is 6 p.m. on Aug. 3 at the Freedom Park tennis courts.
- Girls tennis is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 3 at the Freedom Park tennis courts
- Volleyball is from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 5, 6 and 7 at the gym
- Soccer is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Freedom Park. Contact David Fletcher at 879-3718 with questions.
- Women's golf is 10 a.m. on Aug. 3 at Silver Creek Plantation

Girls fall softball
Girls ages 6-12 that want to participate in the Burke County GALS League can contact Libby Cook at 413-4711.

Community/elementary sports
Here is a list of local communities holding sports camps and sign-ups:
- Forest Hill football and cheerleading camp will be held Monday-Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the football fields at Freedom Park. Camp is free. Contact Scott Davis at 438-0708 or 390-4038.
- The East Burke Youth Athletic Organization is currently holding registrations for football, cheerleading and soccer for children ages 5 to 13. Sign-ups are at the Hildebran Pool from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Cost is $35. Contact Fred Brown at 308-4507.
- Oak Hill will be holding sign-ups for football for players ages 5-12 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the fieldhouse. Cost is $25.
-Sign-ups for Glen Alpine football are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Simpson Field. Cost is $45. Contact Cameron Miller for football information at 448-9360. Sign ups for fall softball are by appointment. Call Michelle Lewis for softball information at 403-4710.

- Cheerleading camp is Aug. 10-13 from 6 to 9 p.m. for kindergarten through eighth graders. Cost is $20. Call Traci Stallings at 397-5541 Ext. 3308.

Valdese fall soccer sign-ups
Boys and girls ages 5-13 interested in playing soccer this fall can sign up beginning on Monday. Call or e-mail Doug Knight at 879-2132 or dknight@ci.valdese.nc.us.

Homeschool/private school football A homeschool/private school football league in Morganton is now registering for the 2009 season. Boys ages 12 through 18 are eligible. Contact Scott Smith at 228-3785 or Terry Carswell at 228-3287.

Draughn camps
- Football camp is Monday-Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. Camp is open to first through eighth graders. Cost is $30.
- Cheerleading camp is Aug. 10-12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $10.

Patton camps
- Field hockey camp is Wednesday-Friday from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at Freedom Park. Cost is $35. Call the school at 433-3000.

Patton soccer tryouts
Patton High boys soccer tryouts start at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 3 at Patton. All participants must have a current physical on file or bring one with you to tryout. There will also be a mandatory parent meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the school.

Fall softball sign-ups
Sign-ups for softball for girls ages 5 through 12 are at 6 p.m. on Monday at the Heritage Middle softball field. Contact Libby Cook at 413-4711.

Valdese football
The Valdese Recreation Department will hold football sign-ups for ages 5 to 12 at the Valdese Community Center. Participants must be 5 by Aug. 31 and cannot turn 13 before Aug. 31. Cost is $20. The first football practice will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 3 at the football field behind the Old Rock School.
