The Freedom High boys soccer program brings in nine teams from outside Burke County for the 13th annual Freeom Invitational High School Boys Soccer Tournament, which will take place Monday through Thursday at the Catawba River Soccer Complex (CRSC) in Morganton.
One of the longest-running tournaments in western North Carolina, 2010 marks the 11th consecutive year that CRSC hosts the event.
“We have a strong field and look forward to kicking off the season with a great tournament,” Freedom coach David Fletcher said.
Games start on two fields at 5 and 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Seven of the 10 total teams will play three times apiece, while three other teams (A.C. Reynolds, Hickory, St. Stephens) play only only match and will not be eligible for the tournament championship, which is awarded the team with the most points at the end of the event.
Overtime periods will not be played, but ties will be broken by penalty kick shootouts. Wednesday and Saturday have been designated as makeup dates in the case of inclement weather.
A 15-member All-Tournament will be named, along with three individual awards: Outstanding Defensive Player, Outstanding Attacking Player and Overall Most Valuable Player.
