Four Burke County wrestlers fought through tough brackets to have a spot in the championship finals at the 29th annual Jamie Tuttle Memorial Tournament hosted Saturday by Hibriten High School.

Freedom High School’s wrestlers finished in sixth place with 105 points. Two made the finals and both came away with the gold.

Josh Moses in the 125-pound class  built up a 2-0 lead on Mitchell High School’s Colten McKinney through two periods. Moses added two points on a takedown while McKinney squeezed out a point on an escape. The match ended with a 4-1 decision for Moses.

Mason Webb, in the 189-pound final, didn’t waste any time securing his first-place medal. With a two-point takedown he pinned Alleghany High School’s Luke Hampton with 57.2 seconds left in the two-minute opening period.

Patton High School, whose wrestlers finished seventh with 86.5 points, and Draughn High School, 10th with 63 points, each had one participant in the championship finals. Both were matched up against opponents from powerhouse Fred T. Foard High.

Patton’s 119-pounder Jaylen Wilson couldn’t make it through the opening period. Foard’s Caleb Griffin got a pinfall with 27.4 seconds left.

Draughn’s 140-pounder Jaron Johnson made it through the opening period against  Caleb McRorie, but facing a 9-0 deficit he ultimately fell when McRorie pinned Johnson in the next period.

Third-place Burke County finishers at Saturday’s tournament included Patton’s Joseph Franklin (103), Tyler Buff (171), Judge Fulenwider (215) and Draughn’s Casey Brendle (215).

The 215-pound third-place match resulted in a forfeit in Brendle’s case due to a rule set by the NCHSAA that prohibits a wrestler from  having more than five matches a day.

Freedom’s Trevor Miller (152) and Ethan Presnell (171) finished in fourth place.

Fred T. Foard won the team championship with 213.5 points.

On Tuesday, Draughn will be back on the mats at North Lincoln, Freedom hosts Foard and West Buncombe and Patton goes to South Caldwell.

East Burke wrestlers finish eighth at Indian Classic

HICKORY – For the first time since 1996, the East Burke High wrestling team was shut out of championship finals matches at the 39th annual Indian Classic tournament hosted by St. Stephens.

The Cavaliers did, however, have two consolation finalists, including one third-place winner. Cody Townsend took home third place in the 130-pound bracket, while Ginules Xiong finished fourth at 112.

EB is back at St. Stephens Tuesday in a dual match with the host Indians.

Freedom wrestlers extend winning record over Warriors

Freedom won 55-15.
