M.S. ROUNDUP: Table Rock sweeps hoops openers

A new era has begun for the Table Rock Middle girls basketball team.

Following an 0-13 campaign a year ago, the Lady Falcons stormed into the new season with a 36-22 Foothills Athletic Conference (FAC) road win Tuesday at Heritage.

TRMS’s speedy seventh-grade guard duo of Ariyana Williams and Amaryah Corpening paced the Lady Falcons with 12 points each. Williams contributed nine points in the opening half while Corpening tallied four field goals in the decisive third period where Table Rock outscored the Lady Eagles 16-3.

Falcons’ center Amy Rhoney added seven points, Laney Hodges led the team in rebounding, and Williams and Jade Crump chipped in with three assists each.

Heritage was paced offensively by Courtney Robinson (nine points) and point guard Gabby Buruato (eight). Carrie Stoudemire dished out two assists.

 

Boys basketball

Table Rock 34, Heritage 14 - The Falcons broke open a close game at the half Tuesday in Valdese by outscoring Heritage 10-1 in the decisive third period, when B.J. Emmons scored six of his game-high 13 points.

TR’s Russell Cuthbertson contributed nine points while forward Austin Fisher added eight. Falcons’ point guard Nigel Moore dished out a game-high three assists.

Heritage was led offensively by Mason Poteat (four points) and Ben Phillips (three).

Table Rock (1-0) hosts East McDowell late Thursday, while Heritage (0-1) visits East McDowell on Monday.

Liberty 55, East McDowell 32 - The Knights opened up FAC action with a 23-point road win Monday in Marion.

LMS guard Daxton Bostian led the Knights with 22 points, four assists and three steals. Peyton Mull supplied 14 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

 “We came out a little sluggish in the first half,” said LMS coach David Waters, “but a strong defensive burst to start the second half allowed us to pull away.”

LMS (2-0, 1-0) hosted East Burke late Thursday.

 

Wrestling

Table Rock 66, Heritage 20 - The Falcons start the FAC wrestling season on a high note Tuesday, gaining 11 victories — eight by pinfall and three by forfeit.

Gaining wins for the Falcons were Calyn Clark (93 pounds; pin), Garrett Ward (103; pin), Logan Cobb (112; pin), Jasmine Whisnant (125; pin), T.J. Benjamin (130; pin), Austin Dyer (135; pin), Cody Grasse (140; pin), Quentin Cunningham (145; forfeit), Will Smith (152; pin), Todd Gerrmann (171; forfeit) and Kelsey Hussey (heavyweight; forfeit).

“It has been a season of transition for us,” said TRMS coach Brandi Clark. “We have had several new coaches, but it is exciting to see that under Mason Webb and Greg Spearman, the kids seem to be growing and learning to love wrestling,”

“The team is excited after their first match win …. Hopefully, they will continue to dig deep and work hard toward more victories.”

Heritage gained four wins. Seventh-grader Timmy Abee (160) won by tech fall, Logan Cline (189) by pinfall, Allen Roth (215) by decision and Adam Street (83) by forfeit.
