There was nothing sweet about it.
The Burke County East G.A.L.S., better known as Nuttin’ Sweet, faltered in their quest to capture the 2011 Tar Heel League 10U State Softball Championship.
Perquimans, based out of Elizabeth City, swept the local squad 2-0 and 8-2 on Sunday to claim the coveted crown on Field No. 1 at Catawba Meadows.
Coming off an all-important win against Cleveland Co. in the loser’s bracket final on Saturday, Perquimans utilized strong pitching in claiming Game 1 to force the decisive softball contest.
Perquimans’ Lindsey Winslow and Megan Denson kept Nuttin’ Sweet off stride with a variety of pitches, as the duo only allowed four hits – each in different innings.
Nuttin’ Sweet was led offensively by Lindsey Cline (triple in the first, ground-rule double in the fourth) and Taylor Moody (single in second, infield single in fifth), but the team left five runners on base.
Perquimans tallied both runs on three hits in the top of the first.
Nuttin’ Sweet used Abby Gray (K), Cline (six Ks) and Moody (K) on the mound in the opener.
In Game 2, Nuttin’ Sweet’s early lead vanished quickly as Perquimans scored eight unanswered runs. Nuttin’ Sweet’s Cline belted a double to center field. Cline, via one Perquimans’ error, rounded third and scored the game’s first run in the bottom half of the first inning.
Perquimans took over the game in the third inning with five runs on five hits.
Nuttin’ Sweet catcher Rachel Hughes singled to lead off the sixth, then scored on a RBI single to right field by MaKaley Lovelace.
Nuttin’ Sweet also obtained hits from Zoie Johnson (single to right-center field), Emma Ingle (single to left-center field) and Sahara Gladden (infield single).
Moody (two Ks) started on the mound and pitched three innings while Cline (two Ks) completed the game on the bump for Nuttin’ Sweet.
