Burke 14U all-stars rally to win state

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Capping what proved to be a weekend to remember for area youth softball teams, the 14U Burke County G.A.L.S softball all-stars were the fourth local team to win a state title after claiming the Tarheel League Championship last Sunday at Catawba Meadows.

The 14U Burke girls finished fourth in the state last year, and had the chance to avenge a loss to the team that knocked them out in 2010, Johnston County.

When the tournament started with an error-filled loss for Burke Co., the situation looked bleak.

They turned up the heat, however, and beat Alexander Central, 7-3, on Friday before toppling both Angier, 9-6, and Granite Falls, 19-7, on Saturday.

Two wins against a tough Johnston squad were required Sunday for the local team to hoist the trophy, and they did just that, with a 15-5 mercy-rule victory setting the tone for a hard-fought 7-6 championship game victory.
