The Marlins’ strength in numbers is creating waves in the pool.
The Morganton Swim Club Marlins remained unbeaten this summer with two victories Thursday at the Collett Street Outdoor Pool in the team’s final home match of 2011.
The Morganton girls squad toppled Transylvania County by a 403-134 score, while the boys claimed a 364-89 triumph. MSC improved to 7-0 on the season and will compete in the conference championships this Saturday at Granite Falls.
“We still have a lot of work to do before the conference championships,” said MSC head coach Dan St. Louis. “Hopefully we will be ready, as there are a lot of good swimmers in the conference.”
Five girls went unbeaten in their three respective events.
Riley Carswell, age 8, conquered the 50 backstroke (53.86), 100 freestyle (1:30.13) and the 50 butterfly (49.34) in the girls 8 and under division. Bailey Shuping, 9, picked up triumphs in the 50 free (42.68), 100 free (1:39.52) and the 50 breaststroke (1:00.25) in the girls 9-10 division. Jaclyn Bowers, 12, secured the top spots in the 200 individual medley (3:13.15), 50 fly (37.56) and 50 breast (48.72) in the girls 11-12 class.
Fifteen-year-old Hannah Keller obtained first-place finishes in the 50 free (32.59), 100 back (1:19.14) and the 100 free (1:15.18) in the girls 15-18 division.
Ellen Anderson, 16, grabbed victories in the 200 free (2:38.52), 200 IM (2:55.79) and 100 breast (1:31.24) while competing in the girls 15-18 classification.
Three boys sported perfect individual marks in their respective three events.
Gabe Rodriquez, 7, leveled the field by winning the 50 free (49.94), 50 back (1:05.80) and the 50 fly (1:04.69) in the boys 8 and under segment. Teammate Mario Sacchetti, 9, added triumphs in the 50 free (36.93), 50 back (51.59) and 50 fly (45.08) during the boys 9-10 events. Payne Smith, 17, dominated in claiming the 50 free (40.18), 50 back (50.86) and the 100 free (1:34.01) in the boys 11-12 division.
“We had a good meet with a lot of fast swims. It was a great team effort,” added St. Louis.
Nine other MSC girls secured at least one individual victory in Thursday’s final home dual meet.
Kirsten Harrison, 12, took first in the 50 free (32.76) and 50 back (39.46) while settling for second in the 50 fly (37.62) while competing in the girls 11-12 area. Campbell Lindquist (9) also claimed two wins – in the 50 back (53.52) and the 50 fly (56.01) – while finishing runner-up in the 50 free (45.80) in the girls 9-10 division.
Erica Clontz (50 free – 49.49), Elizabeth Evanko (100 free – 1:17.98), Sarah Evanko (100 fly – 1:21.06), Heidi Keller (100 fly – 1:36.99), Chloe Poteet (100 back – 1:41.83), Emma Sacchetti (50 breast – 1:04.21) and Isabella Sacchetti (50 free – 59.41) each secured one first-place finish on the hot and humid evening in Morganton.
Three MSC boys snagged two individual triumphs. Josh Byrd, 16, won the 50 free (27.97) and the 100 back (1:15.99) in the 15-18 division. Mark Evanko won both the 200 free (2:37.39) and the 100 fly (1:12.56) in the 15-18 class. Zack Shuping secured top finishes in both the 100 free (1:06.37) and the 100 breast (1:35.34) in the 15-18 division.
Ten more boys captured one individual title in the dual meet.
James Collett (50 breast – 1:11.68), Jacob Dembski (50 breast – 1:00.68), Jordan Dembski (100 breast – 1:39.01), Justin Fortune (50 breast – 52.79), Jason Lackey (100 fly – 1:33.80), Alex Lindquist (50 fly – 51.29), Hunter McCann (200 IM –3:06.69), Emerson Miller (50 free – 1:01.37), Nolan Miller (100 free – 1:41.55) and Joshua Sanders (200 IM – 4:32.89) split the waves to collect a victory each.
