Morganton’s senior league (age 16 and under) softball team, the defending back-to-back state champions, will be participating in the Southeast Regional Tournament starting this weekend.
Opening ceremonies for the event are tonight, and the 12 local girls’ first game will be Saturday at 12:15 p.m. against the host team.
There are eight teams vying for the regional crown and with it, a chance to move on to the Senior League Softball World Series in August. The teams are divided into two groups for the opening portion of the tournament.
Pool A will be composed of Virginia, Florida, South Carolina and West Virginia; Pool B consists of Morganton as well as fellow state champs from Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.
Pool play is slated to end Monday, with the semifinals Tuesday and the championship game Wednesday. The local team is coached by Colon Saunders, Eddie Davis and Wesley Smith.
