Burke County Post 21’s two-game win streak ended at Cherryville on Tuesday when host Post 100 scored in seven of the eight innings they batted to win 12-3.
The victory keeps four-time defending Area IV champion Cherryville (6-1, 4-0) in first place in the Western Division, while Burke (4-6) lost its second chance this season to climb back to .500 overall after a 0-3 start to the summer.
“We did not pitch particularly well, made some defensive miscues that the other team took advantage of, and did not compete well at the plate,” said Post 21 coach Ron Swink. “Playing one of, if not the best team in the division, you can’t play like we did and be competitive.”
Post 100 took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning when Blake Mostetler slammed a three-run homer over the right-field wall. Burke scored two runs in the top of the second to trail just 3-2 when Tyler Powell doubled to left, scoring Justin O’Dear and Alex McGee.
But that’s as close as things got, as Cherryville’s Cameron High shut down the Burke bats through the first six innings.
Post 21’s only other run in the game came in the fifth inning, when Tyler Hopkins singled, went to second base on a Donnie Hughes walk, then scored on a throwing error. By that time, the home team was ahead 7-3 en route to their big win.
Burke County’s Logan Cook took the loss on the mound despite allowing just three hits. Cherryville scored runs in the second and fourth inning without picking up a hit, as the opportunistic team was using walks and wild pitches to move around the bases.
Lucas Clarke pitched three innings for Burke, giving up three runs, and Cam Waters pitched the last inning for Post 21, allowing two more runs.
Offensively, Post 21 had a fairly weak night at the plate, with the exception of McGee, who had three hits, half of Burke’s total for the evening. Powell’s second-inning double was the only extra base hit for Post 21, and Hopkins and Brent Rowe, each added fifth-inning singles.
Cherryville picked up its 12 runs on 10 hits while committing three errors, while Post 21’s stats showed three runs on six hits and two errors for the night.
“Other than (Alex), we just plain did not get the job done in the batter’s box,” Swink said.
Post 21 travels to Clover (S.C.) Post 38 tonight at 6 for a non-division contest before a nine-day layoff. The team next plays at Shuey Field on June 17 versus Caldwell County Post 29.
