The Burke County American Legion Post 21 baseball team traveled down to South Carolina on Thursday and defeated Clover Post 38 by the score of 12-3.
Bouncing back from Tuesday's 12-3 loss to Area IV West leaders Cherryville, Post 21 (5-6, 4-6) got its pitching and hitting back in order across the state line.
Donnie Hughes started and pitched a super first four innings in the seven-inning contest, only allowing one unearned run. Fellow Burke players Mason Webb, Dustin Cabell and Justin O'Dear each threw an inning as well.
Post 21’s bats were active, as Tyler Hopkins had a triple and double, while Lucas Clarke and Cam Waters each added two hits to the attack.
A big four-run fifth inning featured a single by Tre Young, doubles by Brent Rowe and Alex McGee, and a RBI single by Taylor Powell.
Burke used errors and walks to score two runs without a hit in the second inning, then after blowing the game open in the fifth, tacked on three runs each in the top of the sixth and the seventh frames.
“This was a good non-conference win for the players, as everyone got to play,” Burke County coach Ron Swink said. “Winning like this feels good going into the break for the players. I think the team will come back strong, as we have shown we can compete with every team in the league when we play our game.”
The “break” Swink referred to is the standard midseason 10-day or so hiatus he’s given his summer players for some time now. Post 21 is idle until Friday night’s home contest with rival Caldwell County Post 29.
That game starts a stretch of seven games in nine days to close the regular season.
