The Morganton junior American Legion baseball team lost an extra-inning pitchers’ duel Monday on the road against the Watauga “A” team in the opener, 2-1, before rallying for a 7-2 win in the nightcap.
Morganton (11-13) got a fantastic complete-game outing from pitcher Chris Reid in game one. Reid threw 87 pitches and held Watauga scoreless through seven innings, as the game moved to extras tied 0-0. Morganton scored in the top of the eighth when Bryce Moses doubled, Thomas Singley’s bunt moved him to third and Jonathan Morgan’s groundout brought him to the plate.
Reid recorded the first out in the bottom of the same frame before a pair of runs by the host team ended the contest. Christian Fulenwider was 2 for 2 at the plate in the opener, while Singley, Morgan and Hayden Caraway each connected for singles.
In the second game, a five-hit, six-run fourth inning sealed the Morganton triumph. Brock Toner pitched the entire way and earned the win, while Jacob Rooks and Jack Reid had two hits apiece and Moses, Singley and Toner one each.
Morganton hosts the Watauga “B” team on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Patton High.
