The Valdese Post 234 junior American Legion baseball team had the bats going Tuesday at Draughn High in a doubleheader split with West Caldwell, winning the opener 9-8 before falling 11-6 in extra innings.
Valdese (4-10) rallied late in the first five-inning game with four runs in the bottom of the last inning to earn the victory.
The comeback started with two outs and West ahead 8-5. A walk issued to Alex Monroe, coupled with singles from Grant Street and Ray Pierce loaded the bases.
The next batter, Mason Biddix, blasted a two-RBI single to pull Post 234 within one run. Ryan Moorefield then singled to bring home Pierce for the tying run, and another RBI single from Clint Spinks brought Biddix home for the victory.
Valdese then built a 4-0 lead through two innings in the nightcap, but West scored six runs in the third to snatch the lead.
Valdese added two runs in the third off consecutive throwing errors for a 6-all tie, and an fifth-inning RBI single from Landon Murray knotted the game again at 7-all. But Colton Arrowood was tagged out at the plate for the third out, sending the game to extras where West added a five-spot for the win.
“We hit it good tonight but didn’t throw as well,” said Post 234 head coach Chris Cozort. “Looking at us now, from two weeks ago, we are making strides.”
Winners of four of the last six games, Valdese hosts county foe East Burke at 5 p.m. Friday.
