EB swept by Hickory in jr. legion play

Playing their next-to-last home doubleheader of 2011, the East Burke junior legion baseball team was swept by visiting Hickory 6-1 and 7-2 on Wednesday.

Game one starter Matt Whisnant allowed seven hits and two errors in five innings of work on the mound, tossing four strikeouts. Elijah Reese and Luke Phelps both connected on two singles, with Reese scoring the lone run.

In game two, Whisnant, Reese, Phelps, Tucker Cranford and Jacob Lail each recorded one hit for EB (2-15), with doubles by Cranford and Reese. Reese started and tossed three innings, allowing five runs on two hits with five walks. Tanner Davis and Zach Lowder each threw an inning in relief, combining to allow three runs on four walks and three hits.

EB plays county rival Valdese Post 234 today at 5 p.m. at Draughn High.
