After a 1-5 start to the summer, the Morganton junior legion baseball team crept up on the .500 mark all season and finally eclipsed it with a doubleheader sweep of Fred T. Foard at Patton High in Wednesday’s season finale.
Morganton won 2-1 and 5-4 to finish the year with a 17-15 record.
In the opener, Jonathan Morgan (3 IP, five hits, run, two Ks) and Wyatt Fleming (2 IP, four Ks) combined on the mound, while Bryce Moses (double, RBI) and Chris Reid (walk) scored the team’s only runs.
Game 2 saw Morganton trail 4-3 going into its final at-bat in the fifth. Fleming led off the frame with a walk and advanced to third on a steal attempt and errant throw by the catcher after a strikeout. Luke Baker then put a ball in play and reached first safely, scoring Fleming. Back-to-back walks issued to Chandler Grindstaff and Trenton Totty loaded the bases before Morgan hit a full-count ground ball down the right-field line for the walk-off win.
Brock Toner picked up the win in 1 2/3 innings of work, and C. Reid and Moses also saw time on the bump. Morgan finished with two RBIs, and Fleming and Baker scored twice each.
