East Burke’s girls tennis team jumped out to a big lead but had to rely on two seniors to close out the Catawba Valley 2A Conference regular-season finale Monday on Senior Day.

EB led 4-2 at the conclusion of singles but got the clincher when seniors Dakota Fulton/Kara Frogge (no. 2) edged the South Iredell duo of Savanna Baxter/Nathalie Hendrich by a 10-8 margin.

Fulton (no. 3) defeated Baxter, 6-3, 6-1, while Frogge slipped past Tori Plyler, 6-1, 6-3, at no. 4 singles. The Lady Cavs other two singles triumphs came from junior Ivy Beth Abernethy (no. 1) and senior Rachel Crump (no. 2).

East (6-9, 5-9 CVAC) will participate in the conference tournament which begins today at Maiden High.

Maiden 6, Draughn 3 — The Lady Wildcats came up short in the regular-season finale at CVAC champion Maiden, as the Lady Blue Devils (14-0 CVAC) captured five singles matches en route to the victory.

Draughn sophomore Riley Zopp defeated Molly Black, 6-0, 7-5, in the no. 1 singles match. Zopp then teamed with Cassandra Monday at no. 1 doubles to knock off Laura Melonakos/Katie Watts by an 8-4 score.

The Lady ’Cats Haley Brinkley/Mary-Katheryn Hawes (no. 2) downed Kristen Laney/Rachel Wilkinson 8-6.

“The girls competed well to be short-handed against a very talented Maiden squad. Riley continues to up her game winning in both singles and doubles,” said DHS coach Chris Cozort.

“The other girls competed much better against their opponents than the last time. I told the girls … usually when we play Maiden, we are loading the bus before the engine cooled but today it was dark. We didn’t get the (win), but we competed hard.”

Draughn (9-5 CVAC) will enter Zopp and Monday in the singles portion of the CVAC tourney, while Brinkley/Hawes and Amanda Pons/Lily Donnahue will participate in doubles.
