Patton freshman Taylor Fredrickson strolled to the South Mountain Athletic Conference 3A girls tennis singles title by winning three consecutive matches Wednesday.

Fredrickson garnered a first-round victory by injury default against Freedom’s Amber LeGoullon. The Lady Panther ninth grader then toppled R-S Central’s Sarah Jones, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals before downing R-S Central’s Holly Del Rio, 6-2, 6-1, in the finals at Patton High.

Patton’s no. 2 singles player, Miranda Hanlon, earned a first-round victory by default against Burns’ Anna Howard. The junior then stumbled in the semifinals (7-5, 6-2) versus Del Rio but earned a berth in the upcoming 3A West Regional with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph in the third-place matchup against Jones.

The SMAC doubles tournament, which started at the PHS courts and concluded under the lights at the Collett Street Recreation courts, ended with two local teams gaining regional berths.

Patton’s no. 1 doubles squad of senior Emily San Miguel and sophomore Liz Grady posted an opening round 6-1, 6-0 victory against R-S Central’s Annalee Whitlock/Tamela Queen. San Miguel/Grady then clawed past Freedom’s Samantha Roller/Katie Teofrio, 6-2, 6-0, before losing in the final to Burns’ Ivy Shuford/Laura Lineberger despite holding an early 5-2 lead.

Roller/Teofrio bounced back with a third-place win over teammates Stevie Harrell/Jenny Lancaster, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, to join San Miguel/Grady with a regional bid.

Draughn’s Zopp/Monday qualify — The Lady Wildcats’ Riley Zopp and Cassandra Monday qualified for the 2A West Regional, which will be held Friday and Saturday at West Lincoln High.

Zopp strolled through her first two singles matches with straight-set wins in the CVAC girls tennis tourney on Wednesday. She then had to battle back from a one-set deficit Thursday to defeat Maiden’s Michelle Lor, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals before falling to Bandys’ Carson Shell, 6-0, 6-0, for the singles crown.

Monday, an unseeded player, claimed a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 triumph in her opening match before dropping a 6-0, 6-0 second round match to Shell.

On Thursday, Monday won consecutive back-draw matches to qualify for regionals. Monday dropped the back draw championship, 8-3, to South Iredell’s Michiko Gallagher.

DHS seniors Mary-Katheryn Hawes and Haley Brinkley won their opening-round match in straight sets before being defeated in the second round Wednesday, finishing within one win of qualifying for regionals.

Lady Cavs in CVAC tourney — East Burke junior Ivy Beth Abernethy came within one victory of advancing regionals. Abernethy downed Bunker Hill’s Le Xiong, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in the opening round before dropping a 6-4, 6-4 match to Maiden’s Michelle Lor in round two.

In the singles back-draw second round, Abernethy floored Newton-Conover’s Amanda Shuford, 8-3, before dropping an 8-5 decision to South Iredell’s Michiko Gallagher.

Ivy Beth gave a tremendous effort in her singles matches over the two days of play,” said EB coach Angela Hoffman.
