On a beautiful Saturday morning at the George Hildebrand football field, the pre-pee wee teams between Salem and George Hildebrand kicked off the action with an enthusiastic game with the future of Burke County athletes competing with a strong outing. After the little guys finished up, the pee wee and mighty mite teams of Mull and George Hildebrand locked horns in two very competitive contests.
Pee wee: George Hildebrand 32, Mull 26 (OT) - In an exciting pee wee game that went into overtime, two evenly matched teams went at it for four quarters only to finish up tied at 26-26. In overtime, Hildebrand's Johnny Reynolds scored his third touchdown of the game on a one-yard plunge and the Eagle defense stopped Mull on their attempt to score and the Eagles had a huge 32-26 win. Also scoring for George Hildebrand in the game was Jackson Bennett, who had two TD's and Reynolds added a two-point conversion for the home team. Mull was led offensively by Dillon Lail with three scores and Carter Freeman with one TD and a two-point conversion. Each team had big defensive plays as Hayden Poarch had a fumble recovery for Mull and Tucker Hughes picked up a big fumble recovery late in the game for the Eagles. Mull coach Scott Lail named Charles Wyatt and Duran Wilson as defensive stars of the contest, while Eagle coach George Mackey named Sam Mace and Justin Jones defensive stalwarts for the home team.
Mighty mite: Mull 12, George Hildebrand 6 - George Hildebrand’s William Adams scored on a long run early in the first quarter, and the defenses controlled the game until the fourth quarter, when Mull found a passing game to tie the score at 6-6 when QB Bryson Ratliff found Hunter Stacey for the tying score with seven minutes left. Then the same combo hooked up late in the game after Codell Belas picked off an Eagle pass. The Mull pass went to the two-yard line, where Belas finished the TD off with a short run to take the visitors out in front 12-6. Unable to move the ball offensively, the Eagles dropped the game by the 12-6 score to their neighbors from Mull. Defensive stars from Mull were Bryson Holsclaw, Matthew Basnett, Gunner Grady and Gavin Grady. The home team's defensive stalwarts were Chase Lowman, Seth Pruitt, George Mackey and Jordan Cook.
