The visitors’ athleticism was just a little too much for Patton.
Charlotte’s Harding High dismantled the Lady Panthers tennis team, 6-3, on Tuesday in the opening round of the NCHSAA 3A dual team state tennis playoffs.
Patton grabbed two singles victories and another in doubles.
Freshman Taylor Fredrickson (no. 1) utilized her solid ground strokes in downing Alexus Morgan 6-1, 6-7(3), 10-5 in a dynamic matchup. Patton sophomore Sallie McCurry served well in cruising to a straight-set (6-1, 6-1) triumph against Sara Vasic in the no. 5 match.
Junior Carmen Causby (no. 6) battled before dropping a tough 6-3, 7-6(4) match to the Rams’ Crystan Collington.
Patton’s final point came at no. 3 doubles when McCurry teamed with senior Angela Pico to defeat Vasic/Collington by an 8-4 margin.
“I am happy for our team and how well they did this season,” said PHS coach Rob Gregory. “Obviously, I am disappointed at how the season ended for the team, but I look at how far we’ve come from last year (5-6 overall record) to this year (11-2), and this is amazing,”
Fredrickson and Miranda Hanlon will compete in singles while Emily San Miguel and Liz Grady will play doubles in this Friday’s opening round of the 3A West Regional, which will be hosted by Patton.
