The dual-team tennis season is over for local high school girls squads, but the individual regional action is just heating up.

Patton hosts the 3A West Regional today and Saturday with six local participants involved, while Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs is the site for the 2A West Regional, which includes two Draughn entries.

Each regional will showcase 16 singles players and 16 doubles teams. At both sites, the opening two rounds will be held today while the semifinals and finals take place Saturday.

The top four in each bracket qualify for the state tournament which will be held Oct. 28-29 at the Cary Tennis Park (2A) and the Burlington Tennis Center (3A).

Patton has four participants — two singles players and one double squad. Lady Panthers freshman Taylor Fredrickson, the South Mountain 3A Conference singles champion, sports a 22-4 record on the season. Her only two losses on the season came to Shelby freshman Nancy Bridges.

Patton teammate Miranda Hanlon, the SMAC’s third-place singles finisher, also compiled a 22-4 record on the season, with the junior’s only losses coming in four sets to Shelby’s Hillary Lutz.

Panthers’ senior Emily San Miguel teams with sophomore Liz Grady in the doubles event. The duo recorded an 11-2 record in the regular season while finishing second in the SMAC tournament. Freedom’s Katie Teofrio and Samantha Roller, the No. 3 doubles squad from the SMAC, will also participate.

The Draughn sophomore tandem of Riley Zopp (No. 2 singles player in the Catawba Valley 2A Conference) and Cassandra Monday (No. 6 in CVAC) will engage for the right to advance to the Cary Tennis Park. The Lady Wildcat duo will have two tough draws awaiting in the 2A West Regional with Bandys’ Carson Shell and Shelby’s Bridges in their paths.
