The Walter R. Johnson boys soccer squad defeated visiting Table Rock, 3-1, on Tuesday in a key Foothills Athletic Conference match. The Yellow Jackets, by virtue of West McDowell’s 2-1 loss to Heritage, clinched at least a tie for the conference championship.

WJMS scored all three goals in the opening half. The Jackets’ offense was led by Spencer Memmel (goal and assist), Joey Sandy (goal), Francisco Mateo (goal) and Cesar Torres (two assists). Ezequiel Rojas (first half) and Sebastian Perez (second half) teamed in goal for the Yellow Jackets.

“Our defense was led by Santiago Morris, Thomas Lor, Carlos Lopez and Gilberto Ramirez,” said WJMS coach Luis Jimenez-Moreno. “Other standouts during the game were Adonis Domingo, Daniel Uribe, Nikolas Morris, Anthony Orellana, John Barrier, Josue Mendoza, Esteban Berrospe, Isaac Jimenez and Franklin Sierra.”

Table Rock’s lone goal came off the leg of Luis Estrada-Arellano, who drilled a 35-yard free kick into the back left corner of the net with 6:30 remaining in the contest.

Heritage 2, West McDowell 1 (OT) — The high-flying Eagles knocked off second-place West McDowell in overtime Tuesday in Marion. With two minutes remaining in the extra session, Heritage’s Andrew Lilly passed the ball to Jordan Murphy, who booted in the winning score.

HMS (5-4 FAC) scored first in the opening half when Abraham Sagaon was fouled and Xiong Thao converted a direct kick at the 13-minute mark. West McDowell (7-3) scored the tying goal with three minutes left in regulation.

East Burke 2, East McDowell 1 — The Raiders picked up their second victory of the season with a stunning home triumph against East McDowell. Danny Xiong and Steve Lee scored East’s goals.

“We got a big win against a very tough East McDowell team,” said EBMS coach Eric Gramer. “This was a result of a total team effort and hard work by the boys.”

The “Raiders of the Game” were Jacob Keller for his outstanding play in goal and Avery Bumgarner for two assists from the midfield position.

Heritage 3, West McDowell 0 — The Lady Eagles (10-0) clinched the 2011 FAC title with a home sweep of West McDowell on Tuesday, 25-10, 25-14, 25-19.

Courtney Robinson led the Eagles with 17 kills, while Leslie Leonard added 11.

“Brandy Lowman probably played her best match of the year with nine kills, 19 service points and three saves for the match,” Poteat said. “Casey Abee played her usual very solid game and Ga Nou Chue sparked our back row from the bench.”
