A chilly Catawba River Soccer Complex was the scene for the Patton boys soccer team’s final home match of the season Thursday, and seniors Vince Thao (captain), Julio Flores, Christian Orellana, Koobhmoov Lee, Jimmy Sarath, Roger Hernandez, Carlos Roman and Jake Ford enjoyed a big 3-0 SMAC victory over Burns.

The Panthers (9-10-1, 6-4-1 SMAC) hit pay dirt in the 19th minute when Flores crossed a ball into Lucas Vallecillo, who drilled it into the back corner of the net. Then with four minutes until intermission, Thao hit a rocket shot into the goal from 20 yards out to give Patton a 2-0 halftime lead.

After the break, Jevon Morris played a perfect through ball to Ford, who finished off the night's scoring by beating a diving Bulldogs goalie. Patton keeper Sammy Hernandez got the first-half shutout and turned net-minding duties over to Roger Hernandez and Juan Macias in another stellar defensive half.

“We played a very controlled game and kept the pressure on Burns all night,” Patton coach Keith Scott said. “It was a nice way to finish up our home games with all our seniors contributing quality minutes. It really was a great team effort.”

Patton faces Freedom back at CRSC on Wednesday to end both teams’ regular seasons.

East Burke 2, Bunker Hill 1 (OT) — The Cavaliers’ case for the fifth and final 2A state playoff spot out of the CVAC got stronger Thursday evening thanks to a 2-1 overtime victory at home.

EB’s winning goal in the second overtime period was scored by Carver Sigmon, off an assist from Cody Ross.

The Cavs (4-12-1, 3-8 CVAC) first got on the board as senior John Orders took the assist from Elbert Hang for a 1-0 lead before the visiting Bears tied it up in the second half.

East is currently one-half game behind county rival Draughn (3-8-1 CVAC) for the final CVAC playoff spot with three matches left. EB hosts West Caldwell on Monday.
