Patton’s Taylor Frederickson advanced to the singles’ bracket semifinals in the 3A West Regional girls tennis tournament on Friday, qualifying the Lady Panthers freshman for the 3A state tournament to be held this Friday and Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Frederickson disposed of Hickory’s Erynn Hurst, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 16 before coasting past Hibriten’s Diana Moore, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Despite two Saturday morning losses in the semifinals and in the consolation match, it was mission accomplished for the local ninth grader.
Also in singles, Patton’s Miranda Hanlon won in the opening round, 6-1, 6-1, over R-S Central’s Holly Del Rio before stumbling, 6-0, 6-0, to tourney runner-up Alix Theodossiou of Asheville.
In doubles, Lady Panthers Liz Grady and Sallie McCurry were upended in the first round by Crest’s Powell sisters.
“I am really happy that two of our kids advanced past the first round,” Panther coach Rob Gregory said, “Miranda finally getting beaten by the eventual second-place girl and Taylor qualifying for state tournament play. It is quite something for a freshman to do so well, but Taylor has done well all season. Miranda has likewise played well all season, and I look for her to be a leader and play better next season.
“I feel that Taylor has learned so much during this regional tournament that hopefully will help her this Friday.”
Draughn’s Zopp 1 win shy of state — In the 2A West Regional at Gardner-Webb University, Lady Wildcat sophomore Riley Zopp beat Ansley Henson of East Rutherford, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Brevard’s Hunter Hall, 6-1, 6-1.
Draughn’s Cassandra Monday was eliminated in the first round by No. 1 seed Carson Shell of Bandys.
“Cassandra was unfortunate in the draw, earning the right to play the overall No. 1 seed,” Draughn coach Chris Cozort said. “She represented herself well as she has done all year. For her to go from my No. 6 last year to my No. 2 this year and qualify for regionals speaks a ton about her offseason work.
“Riley lost some deuce games that if she could have pulled out, would have definitely made things interesting. The good thing is both these young ladies are sophomores.”
