The Freedom varsity boys soccer team clinched both sole possession of second place in the South Mountain 2A/3A Conference as well as the No. 1 3A state playoff seed from the league with a 1-0 road win at Chase on Monday.

After a scoreless first half, Patriots sophomore Maco Juarez Son scored off a beautiful assist by senior Robby Goodchild for the game’s lone goal. Keeper Matthew Watson notched three saves and combined with junior Andrew Ayers and freshmen Jordan Summers and Eric Burnett for the shutout in goal.

In all, the Pats outshot the host Trojans, 18-5, and held a 4-0 edge in corner-kick tries.

Freedom (13-5-2, 8-2 SMAC) traveled to East Rutherford late Tuesday in a makeup game and returns home today to host Senior Night against Patton at the Catawba River Soccer Complex. JV/varsity twinbill action gets under way at 5 p.m.

South Iredell 7, Draughn 1 — B.B. Yang scored his sixth goal of the season for the Wildcats, who lost Monday in Troutman in Catawba Valley 2A Conference play.

Yang is now second on the team in scoring behind senior Thomas Russell, who has 15 goals on the season.

The loss keeps Draughn (5-11-1, 4-8-1 CVAC) one-half game up on East Burke for the fifth and final state playoff bid from the league. The ’Cats finish the regular season by hosting league leader Newton-Conover today.

West Caldwell 5, East Burke 0 — The Warriors completed a season sweep of the Cavaliers after Monday’s conference road victory in Icard. The visitors set the tone of the game early with four first-half goals, but the EB defense kept West relatively silent afterwards, allowing just one second-half goal.

The Cavs (4-13-1, 3-9 CVAC) travel to Maiden today and hosts Newton-Conover in a makeup game Thursday to end the year.
