East McDowell 3, Walter R. Johnson 2 — The visiting Trojans obtained a season sweep of Walter R. Johnson, but the Yellow Jackets still celebrate a FAC championship by finishing 10-2 on the season.
“It feels really great to be a part of this championship team,” said WJMS tri-captain Santiago Morris. “I enjoyed the experiences, games played and scoring a goal at Heritage.”
Fellow tri-captain Thomas Lor added, “I feel very excited to have been on this team because it is a squad that I can put trust in. My highlight of the season was a 50-yard free kick that almost went in but the Table Rock goalie deflected.”
East McDowell jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime before WJMS responded with an early second-half goal by Joey Sandy off an assist by Francisco Mateo at the 29:30 mark.
East answered with a 45-yard free kick (34:30) to surge back in front by a 3-1 margin, and the Yellow Jackets’ Cesar Torres tallied a goal off a corner kick by Sandy with nine minutes remaining.
“I’m really proud of how our team did this year and the effort we gave during our games,” said tri-captain Spencer Memmel. “My highlights of the season were the two games where I scored a hat trick.”
WJMS has won 39 of its previous 41 matches dating back to 2009. The Yellow Jackets also have captured nine consecutive regular season titles. (WJMS won post-season crowns in 2003-05, 07 and 09-10 but the FAC decided to discontinue the end-of-season tournaments this season because of budget restraints.)
West McDowell 4, East Burke 0 — The Raiders conclude their season with a tough FAC home loss.
“We are proud of all our student-athletes for competing hard all year,” said EBMS coach Eric Gramer. “The boys gave 100 percent and conducted themselves as role models for our school and athletes everywhere."
