The Draughn varsity boys soccer team is done for the year after Maiden won a draw Thursday night to determine which team would earn the CVAC’s fifth and final 2A state playoff bid.
Both teams finished 3-10-1 in conference games, making a random drawing out of a hat a necessity due to league tiebreaker rules, and it will be the Blue Devils advancing to next week’s playoffs.
The Wildcats showed great improvement the second time through conference play, winning three of their last five matches and giving undefeated CVAC champion Newton Conover one of their closest games of the year on Wednesday, battling to a scoreless draw for more than 90 minutes before losing 3-0 in the second overtime session.
