YOUTH FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Salem take 2 of 3 from Forest Hill

»  Comments | Post a Comment

After an enthusiastic pre-pee wee football game at Salem Elementary School on Saturday morning, the Forest Hill pee wees shut down the Tigers, 12-0, in an early defensive battle. Later, Salem answered back by claiming both the mighty mite and midget contests by the same 12-point margin.

Pee wee: Forest Hill 12, Salem 0 — The Huskies (1-1) scored in the first half on Quinton Rice's 25-yard run and then again in the second half when Connor Williams got loose on a 75-yard scamper. Running back Tanner Simmerer made some big gains on the ground for Salem (1-1), while Noah Morgan and Brandon Sparks played well for the Tiger defense.

Besides Rice and Williams for the Huskies, Nick Rhoney and Barrett Thompson were named as defensive stars for the winning Forest Hill squad.

Mighty mite: Salem 12, Forest Hill 0 — Garrett Smith put Salem on top with 3:30 left in the first quarter, then Zane Phillips put the icing on the cake with a short TD run with 1:14 left in the game. Between the two scores, both teams locked up in some strong defensive play. Mason Streppa shined on offense and defense for the Huskies, while offensive leader Sam Laney and defensive stalwart Ben Lowery played pivotal roles in keeping Forest Hill in the contest.

For the Tigers, defensive standouts included Tristan Robinson, Donovan King and Weston Fleming. The Tigers preserved the hard-fought shutout by holding the Huskies at the 1-yard line at the end of the first half.

Midget: Salem 32, Forest Hill 20 — In an exciting finale at Salem, the midget teams put up more offense than in the two earlier contests combined, with the Tigers overcoming a 20-12 Husky halftime lead to pick up the win.

First-quarter action saw Salem (2-0) score the first TD with a nice halfback pass from Corey Duckworth to Darius King from 35 yards out to give the Tigers the 6-0 lead after a period.

The Huskies (0-2) scored three TDs in the second quarter to take the lead into intermission. Caleb Hayden took the ball to the 1-yard line, and Kelvis Dula scored with 6:00 left until halftime to make the score 6-6. Alek Thomas gave Forest Hill a 12-6 lead with a score at the 3:46 mark until the half, but Duckworth rambled 80 yards a couple of plays later to tie the game once more, 12-12.

Then, with one second left on the first-half clock, Thomas got loose down the left sideline for a long score, and Dula ran the 2-point conversion in for a 20-12 halftime edge.

Salem finally sliced into the Husky lead on Jordan McCordy's short scoring run with around four minutes left in the third quarter to trim the margin to 20-18. After several exchanges of fumbles, Salem used a halfback pass to perfection again, with King hitting Peyton Hightower for the go-ahead score from 23 yards out early in the final quarter. Darius King carried in the insurance score with 2:23 to play and added the conversion run.
